How to use Symbols

Updated
May 26, 2016

Symbols let you create custom elements that you can reuse across your site. And if you ever need to change an element—let’s say, a button—just edit the Symbol, and every instance of that Symbol will update automatically.

You can see them in action at symbols.webflow.com.

Creating Symbols

To create a Symbol, just select an element, click the "+" button in the Global Objects tab, and give it a name.

Unlinking Symbols

Need to edit an instance of a Symbol without affecting all the other instances across your site? No problem. Just select the element, then click the Unlink from Symbol button.

Adding Symbols to your page

To add a Symbol to your page, just drag it from the Global Objects tab and drop it into the canvas.

Editing Symbols

To edit a Symbol, double click it in the canvas or Navigator. When you’re done, click anywhere outside of the Symbol and it’ll update across your site.

Deleting and removing Symbols

You can remove a Symbol from a page by selecting it, then clicking the Delete Element button on the lower right, or the delete key on your keyboard. This only removes the Symbol from the page, not your site.

To remove a Symbol from your site entirely, first unlink or delete every instance of the Symbol across your site, then click the Remove This Symbol button from the Global Elements panel. If any instances of that Symbol remain on your site, you will not be able to remove.

Renaming Symbols

Change the name of a Symbol by clicking the Rename This Symbol button in the Global Elements tab.
