How to enable SSL (TLS) on Webflow hosted sites

Updated

Notes:

(1) SSL Hosting is currently in closed beta. Email us at [email protected] to get access, offer feedback, or if you have questions.

(2) In order to use SSL on a root domain (https://acme.com), you'll need a DNS provider which offers the ability to point root domains to a CNAME record. For example DNS Simple or DNS Made Easy.

(3) If your DNS provider does not support CNAME flattening, you can still use SSL, but your SSL site must be served on the WWW domain (ie: www.acme.com). Use a CNAME to point your WWW subdomain to proxy-ssl.webflow.com and mark it as the default domain in the Webflow Dashboard.

Step 1. Enable SSL Hosting in your Site Settings

  1. Open your Site's Settings
  2. Go to the Hosting tab
  3. Add your custom domains
How to set up custom domain hosting with your Webflow site
  4. Set the SSL Hosting switch to "Enabled"
  5. Click Save
Toggle SSL after adding a custom domain to your site

Step 2. Update DNS Records for your domains

  1. Add a CNAME Record of proxy-ssl.webflow.com to your "www." subdomain
  2. Add an ANAME or CNAME Record of proxy-ssl.webflow.com to your "root" domain (i.e. without "www.")
NOTE: Contact your DNS provider to make sure they support CNAME Flattening.
Pressing "Check Status" will show you the CNAME you need to create for your DNS records

Frequently asked questions

What if my DNS provider does not support ALIAS records or CNAME flattening?

You can still use SSL, but your SSL site must be served on the WWW domain (ie: www.acme.com). Simply update your WWW record to be a CNAME to proxy-ssl.webflow.com and mark it as the default domain in the Webflow Dashboard. Subsequent requests to https://acme.com will be redirect to https://www.acme.com.

How quickly is our SSL certificate provisioned on Webflow servers after I toggle it in the dashboard?

It should take less than 15 seconds after you toggle the setting in the dashboard.

How is SSL billed?

Sites with SSL are billed at $5/month. Turning SSL on/off in the middle of a billing period will prorate the fee accordingly.

Do I need to generate a CSR?

No, we handle all of that for you. To set up SSL, all you need to do is turn it on in the Webflow dashboard.

Does Webflow support named certificates?

Not at the moment.

Can I upload my own certificate that I already purchased?

No, Webflow does not currently have this capability.
